Darla, Sammy and Julia: Seems like we’ve been friends forever, right?
Well … the honest answer is yes AND no.
NO, we haven’t been friends forever. We actually haven’t even been friends for a year. Sammy will have known Darla for a year this November. We all met as a trio in January.
But then again … YES, we have been friends forever. Or at least, it certainly feels like it. Maybe that’s because when you’re working tirelessly to take a dream to a vision to a blog to a pitch tape to a [*fingers crossed*] TV show … well, you get pretty close pretty fast with all of those BBMs, phone calls, emails, meetings and mini road trips back and forth between our headquarters in Philadelphia and NYC.
We’re friends. We’re sisters. We’re business partners. We’re motivators, encouragers and celebrators of one another’s lives, passions, dreams, talents … and of our own true selves.
But enough waxing poetic here: It’s pretty clear that we love one another. So for the sake of proving just how deep that love is — and to give you a glimpse into the Darla, Sammy & Julia that can’t always be captured through a Tweet, Foursquare check-in, Facebook update or even video — read on for a brief synopsis of what I love most about US.
Question from any RoadHug member: “Do you have your shit together?”
Response from any RoadHug member: “I told you, I gots my shit together!”
It’s what we say when someone is off task … [or checking their facebook/twitter/email AGAIN] … or just to say something ridiculous at any impromptu moment when pow-wowing.
We picked up the inside joke after staying with friends outside of Atlanta, when we were filming in Athens for production of the RoadHug pilot episode. The inspiration? The song “Ridin’ Solo” by Jason Derulo. Listen to it for the line — and trust us, you’ll start getting your shit together, too.
“HOLLER”
Sammy claims she coined this crazy catchphrase, but Darla says she was using holler way before she met her. But regardless of who brought holler into the RoadHug vernacular, all the girls are using it and it sounds-oh-so-hollerable.
Julia’s Allergies
Julia can’t eat a lot of things: Avocado, salmon, soy, dairy, ginger, gluten … see the issues here?
So when the girls are pow wowing and gotta eat, Darla’s cooking skills are really put to the test so Julia can enjoy a good meal that’s more interesting than the quinoa, sweet potato, eggs or all-natural chicken staples she can always be found eating.
When we actually hit the road, finding food for Julia will become a top priority on our list of off-camera things to do. We’ve already endorsed Panera and Au Bon Pain as two fast food chains with chicken that Julia can stomach. Any other recs out there? We’re going to be eating a lot of chicken between the three of us …
“Is it Sammy endorsed?”
Speaking of endorsements, it’s not really an endorsement until Sammy says so.
Darla caught on to Sammy’s endorsing ways a few weeks ago, recognizing that Sammy liked to vocalize her seal of approval for everyone around her to here. So, in true Darla fashion, she began asking, “Is it Sammy endorsed?”
So when Sammy endorses something, you know the RoadHug girls are onto something good. Just sayin’.
Darla’s Tattoos
Darla, how many tattoos do you have again? 5? 6? 7?!
She just got a new one … and if you look closely enough, you can find some others on her upper back, lower back, lower stomach, shoulder and probably a few other spots that Sammy & Julia just haven’t been lucky enough to see [yet].
Sammy has 1 and Julia has 0. To keep up with Darla, maybe we should get a RoadHug tattoo to ink the bond between us.
Sammy’s Obsession with Running
The girls got an obsession with running that has her waking up at dawn to hit the pavement before meetings, or lacing up post all-day-shooting in Athens because her endorphins are low and she’s feeling runners depression.
How did Sammy get so obsessed? Well, Darla had a goal in the beginning of 2010 to “run 10 races in 2010.” Sammy had always been running for exercise, but she didn’t consider herself a runner. Darla inspired her to jump board the 10 races in 2010 campaign, and after a few months, Sammy was on the fast [literally] track to becoming a real runner.
Who are the best friends/business partners? The ones who inspire.
Darla’s Obsession with CrossFit
When she returned from traveling abroad [Dubai, India ... just to name a few of the spots she hit], Darla caught CrossFit fever.
What’s CrossFit? It’s a new trend in workout facilities that focuses on team training using personal trainers to coordinate and plan scheduled group classes.
You do a lot of sprinting. And a lot of lifting. And a lot of shouting, a lot of cheering, a lot of score keeping. It’s solo competition with competitors who actually want to see you succeed — probably the best thing to happen to fitness since step aerobics hit the average housewife’s living room.
Darla is unfortunately suffering from injuries now and is on a temporary break from her daily dose of CrossFit candy. Time to get up and go on a run with Sammy?
Or … maybe she can just chase boys with Julia …
Julia’s Obsession with Boys
Julia finds inspiration for her singer/songwriter career in all of the right places … with the cutest boys in NYC, that is.
When we hit the road, we all know that Julia is going to be hitting on [pun totally intended] the opposite sex just as much as Sammy will be hitting the pavement and Darla will be hitting the gym.
While the pickings in NYC aren’t too shabby, we’re excited to see what Julia unveils in American hometown cuties across the 50 states. Ted in Texas? Greg in Georgia? Chris in California?
It’s a road trip adventure all of its own … and Darla & Sammy don’t mind sitting back seat for the ride [until they get kicked out of the RV for Julia to have some private time with her new boy finds, that is

Love this ! Good luck ladies~
Just a little tiny side note. Take it or leave it…but you spelled “here” when I think you meant Hear in the above blog. ..just wanted to let you kknow in case you wanted to fix it.
To Julia’s allergies: consider Chipotle, the only national chain that is committed to sourcing its animal protein from sustainable farms. And at home, get your chicken from Weaver’s Way in Chestnut Hill or some other reliable place. Or let me know in advance and I’ll rotisserie a well-bred chicken that will surprise you with the way chicken should taste. Anytime.
